Decision Maker: Portfolio Holder for Public Protection and Enforcement
Decision status: For Determination
Is Key decision?: No
Is subject to call in?: Yes
The Portfolio Holder for Public Protection and Safety approved the following recommendations as outlined in the report on the Stray and Abandoned Dog Service.
(1) That the existing practice of euthanasia for dogs that were either a banned breed or unsuitable for re-homing, be adopted as a formal policy
(2) That the existing practice of kennelling dogs deemed fit to be re-homed that have not been claimed after the statutory period be adopted as a formal policy.
Further to a recent Audit Report, a number of recommendations were made regarding the Stray & Abandoned Dogs Service. The report on the Stray and Abandoned Dog Service scrutinised by the PDS Committee on 20th January 2016, summarised two of these relating to the kennelling and re-homing arrangements, and the management action being taken. The report also made recommendations to Members regarding policies for dealing with dogs that were confirmed as being a ‘banned breed’ or deemed unsuitable for re-homing, and those that were fit for re-homing but had exceeded the statutory timescale for Local Authority care.
The Portfolio Holder endorsed the recommendations of the report as it was necessary to formalise the policy concerning kennelling and re-homing arrangements.
