Decision details

After consultation with committee members and Ward Councillors, the Portfolio Holder for Environment and Community Services made the decision that ‘Option 2’ should be implemented. 

This was the proposal for the installation of a mini roundabout at the junction with Albemarle Road and Westgate Road. This option included an additional pedestrian refuge introduced on the south-east side of the junction.

The pedestrian refuge on Westgate Road would be reinstated and the footway would be extended on Westgate Road (north) to emphasise the one way movement.

The Portfolio Holder agreed that minor changes for the design of the mini roundabout could be delegated to the Director for Environment and Public Protection in consultation with the Portfolio Holder.

At the Environment and Community Services PDS Committee meeting in January 2022, a review of the Albemarle Road and Westgate Road junction was presented and decisions were made in regard to changes in a number of aspects of the cycle route. It was also recommended that proposals for an associated reconfiguration of the junction of Westgate Road and Albemarle Road be submitted to the PDS meeting on 21^st March and that it would include an option for the installation of a mini roundabout.

The options were discussed by the Committee on the night of the meeting and the views of Ward Councillors (who had consulted with local residents) were taken into consideration. Residents wanted an option that would slow down traffic and make the junction safer for pedestrians. The option of the mini-roundabout would slow down traffic and encourage traffic to give way on all arms.

The implementation of the mini roundabout would support the Council’s objectives of ‘Making Bromley Even Better’ by achieving the aim of continuing to manage Bromley’s extensive road network effectively, efficiently, and safely
