Minutes:

At its meeting on 11th June 2013 the Renewal and Recreation PDS Committee had been informed of a package of measures to be funded through the OLF to improve the southern part of Bromley High Street. This included the erection of a large “Bromley” sign, comprising individual letters, on the shops above 2-22 High Street, opposite Bromley South Station, as part of a project to refurbish these properties. The overall cost was £93k, of which £40k was for the sign (£25k for the letters and £15k for the structural frame to hold them in place.)

The Portfolio Holder noted the wider context of the £2m OLF project, which extended the Bromley North Village improvements into Market Square and supported a range of improvements to the street scene at Bromley South, including laying improved surfaces outside Bromley South Station to create a new square.

The Portfolio Holder also suggested that a tour of the High Street be organised for Councillors at the appropriate time so that they could inspect the improvements.

The Portfolio Holder considered the report as a matter of urgency in view of the need to install the sign in time to secure funding from the Outer London Fund (OLF) by the end of March 2014 The owners of the property had recently insisted that the Council enter into a lease to enable the sign to be erected, rather than a license, and urgent approval for this was sought. The lease was for ten years at a peppercorn rent, and electricity for the sign would be paid for by Panther Securities, who held a lease for the building from Network Rail.

RESOLVED that authority be given for the Council to enter into a lease for the erection of the “Bromley” sign at 2-22 High Street, Bromley.
